SCIENCE

We had a few labs during this fun unit on classifying matter and should be ready for our test on Wednesday.

 ELA

Reading: We are wrapping up Murder at Midnight for the next two weeks.  We are practicing note-taking and finding evidence in our reading.  Students are meeting my expectations of note-taking and have become comfortable doing their work independently.  This book has our fifth graders asking inquisitive questions and using inferential clues to help us get closer to who committed the crime.  We look forward to completing the book by Tuesday and taking our test on Thursday.  We begin our new book, Sign of the Beaver, starting Wednesday.

Expository Writing:  It’s all about descriptive writing! We continue with descriptive writing.  We are working on crafting our writing to engage readers by using a variety of sentence types. These include similes, metaphors, questions, facts/statistics, and descriptive sentences.

Word Work:  We will be working with compound words.  Everyone will have the same sorts for the next two weeks.  We will begin differentiating the word sorts soon. Students will be given their spelling test on Mondays.

Social Studies

Two weeks ago, we spoke about a research project aimed at helping us learn more about the remaining states we need to cover. I have shown them a rubric that will be used to score their project.   In order to simplify the project, we’ll be working together as a class to build the California float.  In February, students will be assigned a state and complete their project in class with their partner.  After the float is finished, the partners will present their state.  We are all excited about this project! In addition, we will begin learning about the 13 colonies.

Assignments/Upcoming Tests: Please check the agenda for daily and weekly assignments. Students will have math review work either in paper form or IXL skill assignments. In Addition,

Spelling Test on Monday: Compound Words

Reading Test on Friday: Students will be able to take their notes home to review if needed. They will also have Wednesday as a review day in class.

Science test on Wednesday (Classifying matter)

Math test on Thursday (geometry)

Catholic Schools Week

Throughout this week, we are collecting WARM WEAR and Food Drive. We appreciate any donations you may be able to make during this week.

Friday: School Mass at 8:30 AM.

Sunday: Father Al invites school staff and families to attend the 9 AM Mass to celebrate Catholic Schools. We hope to see you there!

Don’t forget our field trip next Wednesday. They ask us to each bring a towel to use after we make our adobe bricks. We are not sure about the rain next week and how that will affect our trip. We will keep you posted!
