5th Grade Academics

RELIGION

Our attention turns to the study of Mass in Religion. We start by viewing the Eucharist as a Celebration. We have studied the Introductory Rites and this week we focus on the Liturgy of the Word

MATH

We are reviewing and practicing US Traditional multiplication and will soon practice US Traditional Division (long division)

SCIENCE

We are continuing our study of matter by studying properties. We started off today with a fun lab that didn’t quite work….we’ll have to try it again…maybe at the end of our unit. I can’t promise we’ll be any less messy though!

 ELA

Reading: We began our new book, Sign of the Beaver. We did a fun activity reading “snippets” of our book to figure out what the book may be about. Students used their critical thinking to come up with some ideas of what the book may be about. We will continue this week reading chapters 2-5. We will be identifying figurative language as we read and summarize chapters.

Expository Writing:  It’s all about descriptive writing! We continue with descriptive writing.  We are working on crafting our writing to engage readers by using a variety of sentence types. These include similes, metaphors, questions, facts/statistics, and descriptive sentences.

Word Work:  Short week, so we begin our new sorts NEXT week, which will be differentiated. We will continue having our spelling tests on Monday afternoons.

Social Studies

It’s all about the 13 colonies. We continue learning about where and why they were formed. We will be working on vocabulary this week and read about the history of the 13 colonies.

Assignments/Upcoming Tests: Please check the agenda for daily and weekly assignments. Students will have math review work either in paper form or IXL skill assignments. In Addition, reading passage will be sent weekly.

Spelling Test on Tuesday: Compound Words

Friday: Vocabulary Unit 9 Test: Students can take their vocabulary book home for studying.

Homework is due every Monday for Reading. Students must complete all areas to receive full credit for H.W. They will receive their new homework on Tuesday.

Upcoming Events

Wednesday: Preparing for our field trip. They ask us to each bring a towel to use after we make our adobe bricks. We will keep you posted regarding cancellation due to weather.

Friday: School Mass at 8:30 AM
