Dear Families,

We had a fantastic turnout for Grandparents/Friends Day! Our class shared a math game that we played to improve math fluency and also showcased our poetry skills. I am excited about our next school event, which will be on October 18th.

Weekly Homework

Homework is due every Monday

Read the passage and complete daily activities.

IXL Homework for the week:

4th: II.3 (70% +)

5th: B.3 (70%+)

Read daily for 20 minutes (Honor system)

Review multiplication and division facts a few times a week.

Our Academic Week

ELA

Our read-aloud continues to be Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We dive into vocabulary, character traits, and comprehension questions.

Next week, we begin our spelling sorts. A reminder that we do not administer spelling tests weekly but we administer an assessment every 4-6 weeks to check for mastery.

In our writing class, we have been focusing on taking notes and writing poetry.

Our reading for the next few weeks will be the following:

5th: Hatchet

4th: Island of the Blue Dolphins

Math

Math fluency daily (add/sub/multiplication/division).

4th: We have been focused on identifying angles. We will practice making circles with a compass.

5th: We will work on Square Numbers and Square Roots and develop estimation strategies for finding an exact answer.

Religion

We continue to practice the five forms of prayer every morning in our prayer journal. We will learn about Saints of the Americas: St. Romero, St. Marianne Cope, and St. Kateri.

We will learn two main parts of the Mass: the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharist.

Social Studies

4th: Students will understand what inquiry is, the importance of asking different types of questions when using an inquiry approach, and how to apply them in practice through the next two weeks.

5th: Students will learn about state and state capitals. We begin with our state, California. This will allow the students to focus on learning how to make a slide presentation through Google Classroom. We will resume our Social Studies weekly next week.

Science

We have completed our Life Science unit on the Life Cycle. Over the past two weeks, we have learned vocabulary, note-taking, illustrating life cycles, comparing and contrasting life cycles, and we are now ready to be assessed on Wednesday. Students are allowed to take their notes home to study the vocabulary and understand the concept of the life cycle. These lessons were all guided including the labs. Next week, we begin our labs and require students to complete labs independently.

Art

We will begin our fall art!

Music

Our students are learning to play the recorder. It is incredible how much they have learned in the last few weeks. There will be a day when they will show off their new skill. Stay tuned!
