Week of February 27-March 2, 2012
Dear Second Grade Families,
Friday begins our school wide celebration of READ ACROSS AMERICA, (in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Suess). There will be a book exchange that day. Your student can bring in already read, in good condition books and exchange them for another book. Book can be brought any day this week prior to Friday. Look through your shelves for books you would like to share with other primary level students!
School Fair is Wednesday, March 7th, in Biedermann Hall. The time is 6:30 – 8:00 pm. How is that Flat person project coming?
First Reconciliation for your second grader will be on Wednesday, March 28 at 9:30am. Parents (only), hope you can join us in the church for this sacramental celebration. Parents are invited (and encouraged) to go to confession on this morning as well. There will be a celebration following the church service. You will be hearing from our room moms soon as to how you can help with this. Godparents or sponsors for this sacrament and First Holy Communion are not required. And remember your child can be excused after this event so you can continue with your family celebration.
With spring quickly approaching and the beginning of the Spring/Easter sales, please keep in mind the dress requirements for First Holy Communion. If you need another copy of the paper, please let us know.
Please remember healthy (brain food) when preparing snacks and lunches for your student. When we have snacks and an occasional lunch in the classroom, we have observed what the students are eating and drinking. Some of it is not so nutritious. Please limit sweets and avoid soft drinks. Thank you.

IN THE SECOND GRADE CLASSROOM…
RELIGION: We will have lessons on Touching Safety Rules this week. We will continue Reconciliation preparation. A help sheet will be coming home soon to help your child become familiar with the procedure and terminology of this important sacrament. This week we will talk about how saying yes to God makes us happy and why we need Jesus’ forgiveness. The sacrament of Reconciliation gives us peace. We will pray the Stations of the Cross as a school on Wednesday, 2:00, in the church. Please join us if you can.
READING: Reading for fluency and comprehension; vocabulary development; finishing up activities for Jalapeno Bagels.
The story Jalapeno Bagels is about a boy who’s teacher asks him to bring something from his “culture” to school for International Day, he is faced with a tough decision—his mother is Mexican and his father is Jewish. In the story they go through his mother’s and father’s recipes. Pablo makes some of his parents recipes of pan dulce (sweet bread), empanadas (pumpkin or fruit filled bread) and bagels. We will be ending the unit this week and would like to bring in some of the recipes of bread Pablo made in the story for the class to taste. Look for an email today in regards to the snack on Friday.
SPELLING: Unit 24 is a review unit. Look for spelling activities for homework this week, (as well as the Reading Log).
