Dear Parents, October 20, 2014
This week in first grade we will be welcoming a new student! Welcome to First Grade Hailey R. We are now a class of 28! Woo-hoo!!
We are learning…
Language Arts: This week, our reading strategy is “predict/infer”. Before reading a story, we look at the cover, the title and the pictures and make educated guesses (or predictions) on what the story will be about. While reading, we use information learned to conclude (or infer) if our prediction is correct or what will happen next. The comprehension skill that will help us with this reading strategy is predicting. Our phonics focus this week is a review of the short sound of /i/ and verb endings –s, -ed, and –ing. We will also focus on possessive -’s. Our grammar focus continues to be what makes a sentence a sentence.
Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 10 – a short vowel review. The words are on Spellingcity.com. Our test will be on Thursday!
Math: We are continuing with Unit 3: Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting. This week we will learn something totally new (probably for you, too) so please read the family letter with the math homework on Monday! We will be discussing the Frames-and Arrows Routine, as well as counting on a number line, and practice using a calculator!
Religion: We will be reading from our religion book. Our lesson is titled: Jesus Teaches Us to Pray the Our Father. In addition, please return the completed Saint worksheet by Friday!
Science: In science we will continue our study of animals through our discussion of night-time creatures or nocturnal animals! We will also have a special lab this week – dissecting owl pellets! We will be doing this lab on Thursday with the help of our 6th grade buddies!
Social Studies: We will continue with Unit 2: At Home With My Family. This week we discuss lesson 3: Families Make Choices. We will also be taking a look at tools used long ago as we prepare to look at families long ago next week!
