Dear Parents, May 11, 2015
Happy Mother’s Day! I hope all enjoyed their gift.
This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: We have concluded theme 9 and are moving right into our last theme- Theme 10! Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is predicting -using the text, pictures, and our own prior knowledge will help us predict what may happen in the story. Our phonics focus this week is on r-controlled words. This is a vowel + r (such as turn, girl, fern) and the -or and -ore sounds (as in born and store). Our grammar focus is describing what we hear.
Spelling: We have finished our spelling book! For the remainder of the school year we will be completing spelling activities in class as we practice all we have learned thus far.
Math: We will be taking our test on Monday as we were unable to take our test last week. We will be working on Unit 10, once we complete our test. This unit is a lot of review. This week, we will be reviewing fractions, number stories, money and fact families.
Religion: We will be reading from our religion books this week: The Holy Spirit Helps the Church.
Science: In science we are still learning about matter! However, this week we will discuss changes in matter.
Social Studies: On Monday we will be taking our Unit 4 test. We will continue on with Unit 5: My Country, My Heroes.
