Dear Parents,                   September 21, 2015

The first day of fall is this Wednesday! Hopefully this means that cooler weather is on its way!

Here’s what we are doing in First Grade…

Language Arts: Our reading strategy this week is evaluation and our comprehension skill that will help with evaluating a story is cause and effect.  Paying attention to what causes something to happen can help us understand the story and evaluate whether we enjoyed the story or not, and why.  Please practice this comprehension skill when reading nightly with your child.  Ask why certain events happened in the story.  Ask if they enjoyed the story and why.  It is fine if they did not enjoy the story as long as they can tell you why.  Let them explain their favorite part or the funniest part and ask them to tell you why they feel that way.  Our phonics focus is the sounds of the consonants b, h, r, and g and the short sound of /i/ as in “igloo”- where I wish I lived right about now! J Our grammar focus is on using an end mark at the end of a sentence.

Spelling: Our new spelling words are from unit 5. You may practice them on Spellingcity.com. Once you are on the homepage, find the search tab. Under the “Search” tab, please go to “teachers/parents” and type in my name when prompted (Katie Manning). Once you click on my name it should redirect you to my page where all of the spelling words are posted. Please click and practice from Unit 5.

**As a reminder, Monday’s homework will be Rainbow Write 2X. Essentially it is writing the spelling word two more times in pencil.  Then, pick three colors and trace over the newly written words using one color at a time. We will have our spelling test Friday morning.

Math: We are still working on Unit 2! This week we will be working on telling time to the hour, and the value of pennies and nickels.

Social Studies: We will continue on with Unit 1: School Days. This week, we will focus on our fifth and sixth lessons. We will be learning about how we help one another and following school rules.

Science: We will continue with Chapter 1: Plants. This week, we will be learning how leaves help plants and we will be checking on our science experiment from last week, where we tested if seeds can grow without soil.

Religion: We will be reading from the fourth chapter in our religion textbook titled, God Our Father is Holy.
