Note From Mrs. Vazquez:

First Grade is so busy reviewing skills and continue to learn some new ones before our year is over. We have a busy week ahead of us. We are preparing for the May Crowning. The kids are doing such a great job during practice. If your child is reading, please make sure to practice at home daily. We continue to practice in class as well.

FIELD TRIP: Our field trip will be to the zoo on Wednesday, May 22nd. Permission slips were sent home yesterday. The permission slip states that the field trip is on Tuesday but it is on WEDNESDAY. Please make sure to turn in the fee for the field trip in exact change or a check. They will be due on Monday. Thanks to the PTC (Jog-a-thon fundraiser last year) that our cost was very low this year.

Students MUST bring their lunch in a brown paper bag. Please refer to the permission slip for attire.

Homework

Fluency: This will be our last fluency.

Reading Log: This will be our last Reading Log. Please continue reading books because reading is required for summer homework.

MATH IXL: E.8 and R.7

LANGUAGE IXL: No Language

Spelling Sorts: Everyone has a new sort and will be tested on Monday.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We continue learning about vowel teams such as ee, ea, oa, and ai. These vowel teams make long vowel sounds. We’ve added new vowel teams ay (day), ou(bounce), oo (boo!) and ow (flower). Believe it or not but we added more vowel teams! The oo like in moon and the oo like in book have joined the vowel town. We are learning that they don’t always make the same sound. We have added oi (join) and oy (boy)this week.

Reading assessments have started this week. The process takes a few weeks since a one on one assessment. Please make sure to let me know of any absences ahead of time. The kids are showing so much progress. I can’t wait to see the end results.

Math: Counting money with quarters continues to be our review this week.. We will be working on making up and solving number stories. Example: If you have 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 2 nickels. Do you have enough money to buy a pencil and a pair of scissors? (Scissors: 32 cents & pencil is 28 cents).

Please practice the value of each coin especially the quarter. Give your child a few coins to count at home.

Religion: We will be preparing for our May crowning on May 17th. Please make sure to mark your calendars. 🙂 First grade prepare and present the crown to Mary. There is NO exact time for the May Crowning. It will follow mass, which usually ends at 9:20 depending on the homily. Hope to see you on Friday.
