Hello, First Grade Families! It is DECEMBER! This month is full of academics with lots of fun activities on the days leading to Christmas vacation. We made an Advent chain on Monday. It is full of daily activities to remind us of giving to others during the time of year. I hope you enjoy the Advent activities.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts

Grammar/Writing: We begin writing our letters to Santa. In first grade, we send out our letters to the North Pole on Friday. We usually receive a response by December 19th.

Reading/Phonics: We are studying new sight words with a focus on vowel teams (ee, ea, oo, ou and ai). Keep on eye out on vowel teams while reading. As we read, we make sure we include endings in words such as -s, -ing, and -ed. The ending “ed” makes three different sounds (/t/, /id/, and /d/).

I hope you have been playing Guess the Covered Word at home before beginning a new book. It’s great practice for making predictions, checking words for beginning sounds, and checking to see if the word makes sense.

Math: We are moving along fast in unit 4. We are working on temperature and estimating measurement (inches). There is lots of review on skip counting, addition and subtraction word problems and telling time.

Religion: Advent Chain/Advent Prayer Assembly on Tuesday

Science: Last week, we learned about the turkey’s wattle and snood. This week, we learn about becoming weather watchers. This is the perfect week to make our observations.

Art: Ms. Spooner will be next Tuesday

Please send me an email if you have any questions.

Mrs. Perez-Vazquez
