Dear 1st Grade Families,

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet last week for conferences.

HOMEWORK

Fluency

Math IXL E.3. and M.2

Language IXL FF.2

Reading Log: Reading Log is 20 minutes a day. I have added the BOOK REPORT worksheet to this week’s assignment. You may count the minutes used to write their book report on their reading log.

FAQ during conferences: How long should my child be reading on their own? I recommend students read 15 minutes on their own. You can use the other 5 minutes to read to your child.

Sight Words: Students are super excited to show off how much they have increased on their sight word recognition. Students must be able to read a sight word in 3 seconds or less. I send home new sight word books by the end of the week if your child has achieved 90% or higher from the previous sight word book.

Spelling Test: Spelling Test will be on Friday.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts

Grammar/Writing: We are working on nouns and verbs. We are reviewing punctuation marks. They are writing sentences to show which one is a question, exclamation or statement with reminders to begin with a capital letter.

We are reading different topics to be able to become an expert on a topic. I recommend you read nonfiction books at home when possible.

Reading/Phonics: In phonics, we are learning that we have to be able to read ALLLLLL of the word to understand it. We are focusing on common word endings such as -s, -ers-, -ed, -er and -ing. The ending -ed can stump us but we have to remember that it can make three sounds (/d/, /t/, /id/) like in smelled, stopped, and started.

In reading, we are learning how nonfiction books have a table of contents, diagrams, labels, vocabulary/glossary and much more.

Math:

We started Unit 5! Our focus this week will be base ten blocks.

Example: 1 ten+3ones= 13 or 14=1 ten +4 ones

Science: National Geographic Magazine: We read articles on the topics about bears, snow weather and manatees. We are learning to retain the information they have read. I always encourage students to share what they have learned. Please ask them about three things they remember about each article.
