First Grade Families-

We have a short but busy week since Thursday will be out 100th day of school! We will be doing some fun 100th-day activities. This week is the start of Catholic Schools Week. Friday will be Parents Day! I hope everyone is able to attend this special day on January 24th from 8:30 a.m.-11:40ish. You get to experience some learning time with your child. Hope to see you all on Friday.

HOMEWORK

Fluency

Math Worksheets: This week there is no IXL. Students received three math worksheets that should be a review with Base Ten Blocks and using Greater/Less than and equal to signs.

Reading Log: Reading Log is 20 minutes a day. Book reports looked great this morning. Reminder: You may count the minutes used to write their book report on their reading log.

Sight Words: All students were tested last week unless there was an absence. I sent home sight word booklets on Friday. If your child received a 90% or higher on a booklet then they receive the next level. Please keep practicing. If you misplaced any booklets, please let me know and I will give you a replacement. Send a note in their planner.

Spelling Test: Spelling Test will be on Monday unless noted in their planner.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts

Grammar/Writing: We are working on nouns and verbs. We are reviewing punctuation marks.

We are working on writing more than one page on a topic. This week we will begin to add some more information on each page.

We are reading different topics to be able to become an expert on a topic. I recommend you read nonfiction books at home when possible.

Reading/Phonics: In phonics, we are reviewing our common endings but are focusing on the tricky “y”. The tricky Y at the end of a word can make a long i or long e sound like in my and Lily. We are learning to not be fooled by the Y.

In reading, we are learning how nonfiction books have a table of contents, diagrams, labels, vocabulary/glossary and much more. We are learning to stop and study each page and guessing what might come next.

Example: I bet he next page will tell about…

Math: Last week, we learned about greater than, less than and equal to signs. This week we will be learning how to answer math questions like Who has less? How much less? Who has more? How much more? These types of questions seem to always stump my first graders.

Social Studies/Science: Martin Luther King Jr/Seasons: What season does your birthday land on?
