First Grade Families-

It is so wonderful to see the students adjusting to our classroom routines and expectations. Last week, we began our library time. Students will begin checking out two books this week and are due every Tuesday. They are allowed to take them home but I do ask they keep them in their homework folder for safe keeping.

Weekly Homework

Students must read at least 20 minutes a day. Reading to your child daily is very important for their reading development. In the 20 minutes, you may read to your child, have your child read to you, or take turns reading. All students are at different levels in their reading ability so choose the perfect type of reading for your child (read to your child, have your child read to you, or take turns).

Homework due EVERY Tuesday:

Reading Challenge: Students may color in at least one apple a day. Next week, we will have our October Reading Challenge.

Math IXL: A.5, A.19 and S.1

All three skills for IXL are due on Tuesday. This will allow students to not be on their screen for long periods of time.

Next week, I will be adding fluency homework.

Word Work: Students are going home with a list of their spelling words. Remember, I am only testing to see if they are mastering the beginning sound of their word sort. Gradually students will be moving on to words throughout this year.

Sneak Peek to our Academic Week

Word Work: We took our first spelling test on Monday.

Reading/Phonics: We are working on Phonemic Awareness daily, reviewing sounds and letter names with fluency, and learning our reading routine. This week is our official reading groups.

We will learn to take a sneak peek, learn what to do after you read a book, and learning skills to figure out an unknown word.

Writing/Grammar: It is so exciting to watch the kids enjoy writing with each other and listening to each other’s stories. We are learning to write sentences with spaces and punctuation marks.

We continue to identifying punctuation marks (period, question mark, exclamation mark).

Math: We will take our first math test on Tuesday & Wednesday. This will be their first math test so it will be administered in a small group. We have been working on skip counting (2’s, 5’s, 10’s), tally marks, identifying larger numbers, and number formation.

Religion: Last week, we took a tour of our beautiful church with our buddies. This week we learn that the sign of the cross is a prayer. Please practice doing the sign of the cross at home. One prayer we have been working on mastering is the Hail Mary. Practice saying the Hail Mary at home.

Science: This week we will learn why animals camouflage. We will also be looking for camouflaged moths in our trees (paper trees made by Mrs. Vazquez).

Social Studies: Maps continue to be our focus. Our goal this week is to make a map.

Art: Pumpkins was the lesson for Monday. I will have them upload their pumpkin on their kindle once it’s complete. I keep most of their artwork throughout the year. We usually have an exhibition of all their beautiful art closer to Spring.
