First Grade Families-

Yesterday, we had wonderful picnic during lunchtime. We laughed, talked and enjoyed the wonderful sun. The kids earned the picnic with the hard work of demonstrating they are listening to each other, being honest, ready to learn, and using kind words and actions. We will be having another surprise very soon since many of you helped add sparklers to our bucket last week.

Weekly Homework

Students must read at least 20 minutes a day. Reading to your child daily is very important for their reading development. In the 20 minutes, you may read to your child, have your child read to you, or take turns reading. All students are at different levels in their reading ability so choose the perfect type of reading for your child (read to your child, have your child read to you, or take turns).

Homework due EVERY Tuesday:

Reading Challenge: Students may color in at least one spider a day. This week’s reading challenge has a lot more fun activities.

Math IXL: A.3, A.7, C.1

All three skills for IXL are due on Tuesday. Remember to allow them a few minutes a day instead of having them do the skills all on one day.

Fluency Homework begins today. Please do activities daily NOT in one day. Please read the parent letter before starting the fluency homework. This is all new to 1st grade as homework so don’t be shy to ask questions.

Word Work: Study sounds your child is working on in their sort. Copy of words and sort should be in homework folder. Some kids write their spelling words in their planner on Monday and others on Wednesday so I will be sure to send new sort and words in their homework folder on Tuesday.

Sneak Peek to our Academic Week

Word Work: Some kids are working on consonant sounds or digraphs (sh, ch, wh, th). If your child is working on digraphs, I expect them to write the sh, ch, wh, th when they hear it at the beginning of the word.

Reading/Phonics: Reading Groups are in full swing.

We have learned to take a sneak peek, learn what to do after you read a book, and reading more and more.

This week we will learn to set a reading goal and ask questions. These are skills we review and learn to become better readers. As we say in class, Good Reading Habits.

Question you can ask your child: What can you do at the end of reading a book?

Answer: I can tell you my favorite part, reread or retell the story.

Writing/Grammar: We continue to write small moments. This week we will review spacing between words, adding punctuation marks and not forgetting that when we use the word “I” it is a capital letter.

Math: Please practice skip counting at home by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. By the end of the year, students must skip count and count to 120. Also, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and starting at any number. For example, 47, 57, 67, 87… or 32, 37, 42,…

We will begin simple word problems.

Religion: We are learning about creation this week.

Science: Why don’t trees blow down in the wind? Our follow-up activity will be making Wind-Proof Umbrellas.

Social Studies: We will be making a map this week.

Art: We will be making Jack-o-Lanterns this week.
