Dear Third Grade Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and was able to get some rest in. This week we plan to hit the ground running doing all we can to prepare for the coming demands of fourth grade.
This week we plan to study the following:
Math: We will finally wrap up our study of geometry this week with a test on Thursday. This assessment will include (but is not limited to): shape names for plane figures, parallel lines, and lots on area and perimeter as this is where we spent the bulk of our time on this unit. If you plan to study, I would suggest taking another look at Chapter 9 of our companion text Mastering the Common Core. Students should also be studying their multiplication and division facts every day.
Language Arts:
Spelling Unit 32 focuses on the VCCV pattern again, this time with an emphasis on double consonants. We have worked on this as it relates to syllabication in class. In vocabulary, we will review words that are related to math. As a reminder, students may go to SpellingCity.com if they would like to study online. As we have seen in the computer lab, all spelling units are available here.
Reading— This week we will continue with The Little House in the Big Woods. We will wrap up Chapter 7, “The Sugar Snow.” Later in the week we will work on summarizing the short stories within each chapter.
Language—In writer’s workshop, we will begin to reexamine our “bank” of stories and select one to take through the writing process on up to the publishing stage.
Religion: This week we will try and finish chapter 18, “Jesus Gives the Spirit of the Church.”
Social Studies: We will look at the Chumash people connecting the present to the past. We will identify similarities and differences between the two, looking at how some things have changed over time and some things have stayed the same.
Science: Our class will finish Chapter 1 this week with a test on Tuesday.
Have a great week!
All the Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
