PROCEDURES

  1. PARENT CONFERENCES are scheduled for all students after the first trimester in January.  Parents will meet with the homeroom teacher only; however, are encouraged to send in questions for the other two teachers and these will be addressed as soon as possible.  However, parent conferences can be scheduled earlier if the need arises. 7th & 8th graders will join their parents for their conferences.
  2. BOOK COVERS…We would like to have each textbook covered in a plain brown cover, with a layer of clear contact paper on top of the brown paper.   Please write the student’s name and the subject on the front of the cover. The spine should have the grade, subject and the student number.  The books are to be covered at home and all of them should be covered by August 30.  If the cover is damaged during the year, they will be removed, and the books will need to be recovered in a timely manner.  (The school will provide the brown paper)
  3. CUPBOARDS/STORAGE…Everyone has been assigned a cupboard by student number.  Backpacks are to be placed on the hooks in the cupboards or on the desk hooks in the eighth-grade room.  Books remain in the assigned cupboards on the shelves when not being used.  Lunch containers can be put on the cart provided for that purpose or can be kept in the backpack.
  4. RESTROOM USAGE…We discourage use of the restroom during class time.  Students should use the restroom before school and morning recess, and before or after lunch recess.
  5. SPORTS TEAMS…Eighth grade students fill the roster first, followed by seventh graders and if possible, sixth graders.  Participation in sports is dependent upon continuing good grades and conduct.    Those with sport bags stack them neatly in the designated area in the classroom; please be reasonable about the size.  If staying on campus to watch a home game, students must remain in uniform and must be supervised by a parent or other adult.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

  1. WORK PACKETS are a teacher-generated list of all the graded assignments and their point values. These will be emailed home every other Wednesday (with a few rare exceptions).  This is our way of keeping you informed about academic progress.  Please open the attachment and compare the work packet lists carefully with your child’s work, and make sure everything on the list is in his or her folder. Doing this will help you to keep track of both missing work and the grades your child has in each class.  the first workpacket will be emailed on Wednesday, SepteMBER 4TH ONCE you have looked at your child’s WORK, PLEASE remove it from their binder.  this will help them stay organized.
  2. ABSENT WORK… While a student is absent the teachers will compile a list of the work covered that day.  Students must ask for their work when they return, unless a parent calls the office to make other arrangements.  Check with the teachers and/or more than one friend if the work list is unclear.   NO WORK WILL BE GIVEN BEFORE STUDENTS LEAVE ON TRIPS, ETC
  3. HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK…Students are expected to hand in their work on time.  If work is late it will receive partial credit, subject to teacher discretion.  It is important that all work be completed so that learning can take place.  It is also important that students do not plagiarize any of their work. Please refer to the handbook for further clarification of Sacred Heart School’s policies regarding incomplete work and plagiarism.
  4. SUPPLIES…Students are required to keep track of assigned work every day.  Students need to have all required supplies at school each day. This includes coming to class with their kindles charged. STUDENTS ARE DISCOURAGED FROM BORROWING SUPPLIES DURING CLASS.
  5. PROGRESS REPORTS/REPORT CARDS…The first progress report goes home in October and the first report card will be in December.  If students do not have all of their work in they will not receive a grade in that subject(s) until they complete the work.
  6. INDEPENDENT READING…Students are required to read a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 nights a week or 150 minutes a week outside of class.  The reading can be assigned reading for any subject, novels, newspapers, magazines, Internet research, or even comic books.  Independent reading enhances reading comprehension, increases vocabulary, and provides a wide range of background knowledge.   Independent reading is part of your child’s literature grade and is worth 20 points a month. Independent reading is logged on biblionasium.com
  1. CORE LEADERS are elected in the spring of each year for the following school

year.  Students are required to be 8th graders with a “B” average in both academics and behavior.

BEHAVIOR

  1. BEHAVIOR…To maintain a positive classroom environment we expect students to be respectful, courteous, cooperative and attentive at all times.  Parents will be notified via email when there are behavior problems.  After three incidents students will be assigned a detention for the next Thursday afternoon and a notice will be sent to the home via email.  Students are expected to follow the instructions of all staff members as well as yard duty personnel.  We will schedule parent conferences if poor behavior becomes a continual problem.  The teachers reserve the right to assign an automatic detention for serious errors in judgment, including but not limited to profanity.
  2. ELECTRONICS…We discourage bringing electronic devices to school other than the school-approved kindle. This includes laptops, cameras, cell phones, etc.  If brought to school, cell phones must be kept in the backpack; they should be turned off during the school day and may not be used.  If a cell phone rings during class or a student is using a cell phone during the day, it will be taken and kept in the office, and a parent or guardian will need to pick up the phone from the office after school.  If kindles are not used appropriately, they will be taken and kept in the office.  Kindles are not to be taken outside. Please refer to the handbook for further clarification on cell phone policies.
  3. UNIFORM…All teachers (grades K-8) will enforce the uniform code as described in the parent student handbook.  We ask that parents make sure their students are in uniform when they leave for school.  Continual problems will result in notifications via email, detentions and/or parent conferences.  Please make good choices of school-appropriate clothing on non-uniform days.  If in doubt about what is school appropriate, bring an extra set of clothes in your backpack. Please refer to the handbook for further clarification on uniform policies.
