Dear Second Grade Families,

This week will be a busy and short 3 ½ days.

A look at our week:

We have a poem contest coming up in May. We will be looking for our poems on Monday and Tuesday in class but if your child does not have a poem in their homework folder by Tuesday, please turn one in by Thursday.  The children must memorize a poem that has 15-20 lines.  As soon as your child has his/her poem chosen please have them practice the poem this week and during your spring break.  Your child should have their poem memorized by May 5th .  Please make sure I have approved the poem before having your child memorize the poem.   If you have any questions, please send me an email.

Homework:  The only homework this week will be the reading log for three days. I will send Fluency so students can have extra practice.  Fluency does not need to be turned in this week.     I sent home the reading log with your child and fluency practice. The only homework required for spring break is memorizing their poem.  I recommend your child continue reading for fun or reading to your child during the break.

Religion:  We will discuss the meaning of each day during Holy Week.  We will also do some art activities related to Holy Week.  Expect the students to come home with their work on Thursday.  We will continue our slow motion Mass with Father Bill.  We were able to taste an unblessed host.  We will have another opportunity to taste the host so the children will not be surprised by the taste.  We are getting very close to our First Communion.  Please send me an email if you have ANY questions regarding our Sacrament.

Math:  We will be reviewing addition/subtractions with and without regrouping.  We have started working with array/multiplication using addition.  We continue working on unit 6.  Please go onto the everyday math if your child needs support in any math concepts.  You need to click on homelinks to download a worksheet that is related to the math lesson for that specific unit.  These home link practices are a great review. We will be working on 6.4 -6. 8.  We will be taking our Unit 6 when we return from our break (Tuesday).

Reading:  We have finished Jalapeno Bagel.  We will not start a new story from our anthology but will have a read aloud.  Some reading small groups will listen to the read aloud  about  Junie B. and an Easter party.  Another reading group will continue reading their read aloud, The Chalk Box Kid.  We will focus on summarizing chapters and questioning as we read.

Our class read aloud continues to be Freckle Juice.

We are enjoying the stories by using many strategies of reading such as evaluation, monitoring, context clues to help with vocabulary meaning and fluency.

Writing:  We will begin writing our first persuasive draft.

Spelling:  No new spelling words this week.  We will review vowel pairs this week.

Days to Remember:

  • Assembly 11:15 a.m.
  • This week we will have our Mass on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
  • Also on Wednesday; Free Dress $1.00 and Living Stations of the Cross
  • Thursday will be early dismissal at 12:00

I will encourage you to continue reading at home. I will send some reading ideas so you may add to what you already do at home.  I wish everyone a safe and fun spring break. Happy Easter!

Blessings,

Mrs. Vazquez
