Hello Second Grade Families,
The Halloween donut presale is on! Student may bring in $2 to place your order any time this week or next. Donut will be served October 24th.
This week in class…
Math: This week we will begin to wrap up Unit 2: Addition in preparation for our second unit test next week. If you’re looking for ways to support your child in math at home, practicing doubles facts from 0-10 as well as reviewing addition/subtraction fact families is a great place to work. In addition, I will send home a review sheet with all of those that requested one at the last Unit test. If you’d didn’t request one at the end of the last unit but would like to be added, please let me know and I’ll send one your way along with a Home Links packet for the next chapter.
For IXL math homework this week, please complete the following skills:
K.2 Related Subtraction Facts
K.3 Fact Families
P.6 Equivalent Amounts of Money ~ up to $1
Word Work & Sight Words: New words are up for this week! Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday. Our latest round of sight words testing is almost done, too. New booklets were sent home in this week’s homework folders. Those who have successfully completed some, but not all, of their current booklets will have stickers on those lists which are all done so that your studies may be targeted.
Reading: This week we learned two new strategies for figuring out what some of these tricky words mean. Next we will turn our attention to self-monitoring as readers should be able to check themselves while they read. Finally, we will discuss setting a balanced reading pace as we continue our focus on building stamina and focus.
Writer’s Workshop: We will begin the week focusing on the planning stage of writing. As we learned in class, writers come up with idea and plan before writing. Writers will be able to touch and tell as well as sketch before writing so that our stories are focused on small moments and written across several pages.
Science: We will finish our plant adventures lesson & lab on how seeds travel around the world before getting into our next mystery: Do plants eat dirt?
Religion: Saints have been (mostly) picked and an e-mail will be sent your way with your child’s saint by the end of the week. If you’re feeling ambitious and want to know earlier, feel free to e-mail me and I’ll fill you in.
Have a great week!
Ms. Espinosa
