Hello Second Grade Families:

Happy Halloween! In celebration, we will have a free, free dress day on Thursday. As a reminder, the students should be dressed in comfortable play clothes ~ not costumes.

Wednesday will be a free dress day in support of the American Cancer Society. Please bring $1 (more more) if you’d like to participate.

Math: This week we begin Unit 3: Place Value, Money and Time. We will spend a great deal of time reviewing the ones, tens and hundreds place as we work with base-10 blocks before going on to review counting money and telling time. Since this is a special holiday week, we will not have any IXL math homework. Instead, count all of your candy after going trick-or-treating!

Reading: We will finish our first unit this week!!! In our lessons, we will learn all about how authors tie a whole book together before moving on to the question “What does this author want to teach me?”. Next week we will begin our non-fiction reading unit.

Writing: We will work on zooming in and focusing on small moments in our stories before learning how to work more productively with partners.

Word Work: Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday! Students should be taking home a second copy of their sorts to practice at home. Likewise, there is always SpellingCity.com.

Science: This week we will have a special Halloween theme science lab focusing on the question: what would happen if you didn’t have a skull?!

Religion: Practice is underway for this year’s Saint’s parade. On Tuesday, students took home their “script” to memorize for the big day. Look in your planners for what to practice. Wednesday and Thursday, we will practice in the church.

Have a great week,

Ms. Espinosa
