Hello Second Grade Families,

This week we are pleased to welcome two special guests. On Monday we will enjoy a presentation and activity from Ventura Interpretive Outreach (The Ladybug Lady) only to be followed by a visit from the Ventura Senior Readers Theater on Wednesday! The senior readers will be performing a selection of stories from author Kevin Henkes.

Math: We continue to make our way through chapter 1, this week adding on the IXL math portion of the homework. Each week select skills to be completed will be posted here on the newsletter. This week, for IXL math homework, please complete the following second grade skills:

Q.4 Read clocks and write times to the hour and half hour

M.2 Place value models up to hundreds

P.4 Count money up to $1

Word Work This week students will begin to work on their first spelling sorts. (Up until now we have all practiced together, but now we are grouped and ready for the real thing.) Your child’s sort # can be found in the planner along with the spellingcity.com username and password. I would direct you to spelling city in order to access a complete list of your child’s words. Since this is our first sort and there will be lots of moving around (as we share groups with Mrs. Vazquez and use the computer lab at this time), we will not have a spelling test until next Thursday.

Reading: Our reading groups are up and running! We will discuss differences in how we read (quickly, slowly, thoughtfully) before moving on to reviewing how to make the most of time spent reading in partners.

Science: In class, we will continue with our animal biodiversity lab as we design and build our own bird feeders. We will be working in teams as we develop prototypes specific to the needs of our chosen birds.

Religion: This week we will begin our family life unit. We will focus on God’s gift of family, focusing on how family members care for one another. After that, we will explore rules and choices while discussing how rules keep people safe.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
