This is an exciting week as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week and the 100th day of school. There are many fun activities planned!

ACADEMICS

Reading: As we take charge of our reading, we decode tricky words by slowly checking that the letters and sounds match the words on the page. When decoding words as we read, we ask ourselves the following questions: (1) does it look right? (2) does it sound right?, and (3) does it make sense? If the answer to all three questions is yes, we can continue reading. If our answer is no, we need to try a different strategy.

Phonics: We continue reviewing Phonological Awareness. We are reading words ending in -ey, -y, or -ie. We are also manipulating two syllable words by substituting the beginnings and endings of words in order to create new words.

Spelling: Please check your student’s planner for their sort. Spelling tests are on Mondays. Some groups may spend two weeks on their sort.

Math: We are using place value and base-10 blocks to add two 2-digit numbers. We are also using estimation to check our answers. We will be finishing Unit 4 this week and will take the Unit 4 test on Monday, February 7. Please continue to practice addition facts for sums up to 20.

Writing: Nonfiction Writing – we are learning to write about things of which we have expertise. As we write, we are thinking about our audience and how to hook them into reading our books.

Religion: We are learning that being sorry for our sins and trying to make things better through penance helps us become better people.

Social Studies: We are learning about long ago and today.

Science: No science this week.
