I hope everyone had a Blessed Easter and enjoyed time with family and friends during the break.

ACADEMICS

Reading: We are starting a new unit focusing on books in a series such as Harry Potter, Dog Man, Toad and Frog, Cam Jansen, Amelia Bedelia, and Magic Treehouse. As we read books in a series, we are learning how to collect information about the main characters and see how they respond to problems in their books.

Phonics: We are learning different spelling patterns for the Long O and Long U sounds and how to determine which spelling patterns to use based on where we hear the Long O and Long U sounds in words. We are also learning how to identify vowel team patterns to help us decode new multisyllabic words.

Spelling: Please check your child’s planner for their new sort. Some students may work on a sort for two weeks. Spelling tests will be on Monday.

Math: We will be taking the Unit 6 Assessment on Wednesday. Please continue to work with your child on addition and subtraction facts up to 20. We have been practicing addition and subtraction of two two-digit numbers with and without regrouping. This is the traditional algorithm that requires us to read problems from right to left and top to bottom as we add or subtract numbers in the ones place, then the tens place, and so forth.

Writing: We continue writing opinion letters about our favorite books. We are learning how to make our opinion letters better by retelling important parts as we think who our audience is and what might interest them.

Religion: We are learning how we share God’s love with others.

Social Studies: We are learning how nations work together and how they resolve conflict.

Science: Focus Question: Can you fry an egg on a hot sidewalk? We will be learning about conducting and insulting properties of different materials.

Art: We welcome Miss Sofer for weekly art lessons on Wednesdays!
