Dear Parents,                                                     October 10, 2011

This week in language arts we will be reading about Christopher Columbus and making a project to accompany our story.

This week, our reading strategy is “summarize”.  After we have finished reading a story we should be able to retell the story in just a few sentences.  The comprehension skill that will help us with the reading strategy is story structure.  Knowing that the characters and setting are introduced in the beginning of the story, that the character is faced with a problem during the middle of the story and that the character finds a solution to the problem in the ending of the story will help us understand the story and help us with the ability to summarize.  Our phonics focus this week is the short sound of /u/ and the consonants q, j, and z.  Our spelling words this week will focus on the short sound of /u/ – Unit 9.  Our grammar focus is action words (verbs).  We will also concentrate on the days of the week and homographs; words that have more than one meaning. We will make our own mini number lines this week and we will “walk the number line” with some math songs as we learn number sense.  In religion, we will be discussing saints in preparation for the Saints Parade.  We will begin our study of families long ago in social studies, and we start our unit on animals in science.

Please remind your child to bring their library book to school tomorrow so that they may check out a new one.

Water bottle sales continue on Tuesday and Thursday.  Thank you for your support!

I am sending home a paper for your child’s saint report.  Please use the prompt and help your child write one sentence about their chosen saint. The sentences on the paper need to be memorized for the Saints Parade so please make a copy of what is written so that you can practice with your child.  Please turn in the saint report by Wednesday, Oct. 26th.

Friday is Primary Centers and a noon dismissal day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Have a wonderful week!

Miss  Manning
