Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend, spending some time among family and friends.  This is a full week and we will be busy every day in the classroom making the most of our time together.

Progress reports go home today. Please remember to sign and return them by Friday.

Math: We will give ourselves more time with Unit 2, so the test will be postponed until later next week. Until then, we will be reviewing frames-and-arrows problems, function machines with input/output tables, and finally some counting strategies for subtraction.

For IXL math homework this week, please complete the following skills:

D.2 Growing patterns

L.2 Addition/Subtraction – ways to make a number – up to 20

L.4 Addition/Subtraction – balance equations – up to 20

Word Work: Students will continue to work in their differentiated spelling groups with a test coming on Friday. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal of word work is for students to apply the spelling pattern to other words not on the week’s spelling list. As you study, feel free to give similar words to your child in order to see if he/she really understands the spelling and phonics rules at work!

Reader’s Workshop: Reading and writing come together for another week as we tune in to craft moves made by authors. We will start by finding small moments in books, noticing the details. After that, we will spend some time practicing retells. At home, practice short retells of the night’s reading by telling what happened in the story in order and including all the important parts.

Writer’s Workshop: We continue to borrow from mentor texts, taking ideas and applying those moves to our own writing. Students are encouraged to read as writers now, finding moments that are especially moving (whether that be funny, scary or otherwise) and asking how that can be done in our work. We are also planning to spend a good deal of time this week and next focusing on language conventions as we polish our work.

Science: Our garden is taking off and our hands-on science experiments continue to take root. In class, we will discuss plants and their parents (inherited traits). This week in the science lab, we will also begin to work on a spooky Halloween project!

Religion: Students have selected their saints and now begin the “research” portion of their work. In this week’s homework, you will see a sheet with some basic information to be completed on your saint. This will eventually turn into the oral presentation given at the saint’s parade (although for the saint presentations, we will only share 1 interesting fact), so as you work on it consider what you’d like to share with others or what you think others need to know about your chosen saint.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
