Hello Second Grade Families,

Happy Veteran’s Day! As a reminder, school will not be in session on Monday in observance of the holiday.

In these next couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, our school will be selling donuts as a fundraiser for the LA Archdiocese Adopt-a-Family program. Presales have begun and will continue up to November 14th with distribution planned for the 16th. They are selling for $2 each and each student may purchase only one. Yum!

In more news, this Thursday will be a free dress day in honor of our flag retirement ceremony. Students should bring $1 (more more) and  wear red, white and blue in the spirit of the day.

This week in class…

Math: Our plan is to wrap up Unit 3: Place Value, Time and Money with lessons on data analysis (bar graphs, picture graphs and tally charts), frames and arrows diagrams and lots of practice making change by counting up. At this point, the Unit test is scheduled for next Tuesday the 13th.

For IXL Math homework this week, please complete the following skills:

P.20 Making change

P. 19 How much more to make a dollar

R.9 Interpret pictographs II

Reading: In the first part of these week, we will do our best to wrap up some of our guided reading groups by finishing our stories and discussions. As we near the end of the week, students will be individually assessed for their current independent reading level in order to set goals for the next trimester. Students will be evaluated on both fluency/accuracy as well as comprehension.

Word Work: On Monday, we had our spelling tests from last week and new words went home. Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday. Your child’s words can be found in his/her planner and are accessible online at spellingcity.com.

Science: This week we make the shift from plant to animal life cycles.  We will begin by discussing inherited traits: How are parents and offspring alike and different?

Religion: The class will make a jump into Unit 3: Jesus Gives Us the Gift Of  Peace in the early preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will learn that through Jesus’ words and example show us that God is always reaching out to offer us forgiveness and peace. Much of our conversations will be build around the idea of maintaining friendships.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
