Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy Veteran’s Day! As a reminder, school will not be in session this Friday in observance of the holiday.

Wednesday is a free dress day. Participating students should donate $1 (or more) to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Adopt-a-Family Program.

Also this week…

Math: We’ve made it to Chapter 4: Multiplication and Division! This is the first of three chapters covering larger multiplication and division concepts. This week’s focus is mostly on multiplication. We will learn all about arrays and solve number stories (word problems) using counters and other manipulatives.

For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Third Grade Skills…

E.1 Count Equal Groups

E.2 Identify Multiplication Expressions for Equal Groups

Reading: We are getting into the thick of our non-fiction unit, “Becoming Experts.” This week the students will select a few just-right non-fiction books to read both in class and at home. So far, we’ve learned that non-fiction readers notice details, think about and learn from the text, and ask questions (before seeking out answers). Please make sure your child is reading a minimum of 20 minutes a day and logging that time into his/her new reading log.

Word Work: New words will go home Tuesday. Our next spelling test is scheduled for next Friday.

Grammar: Did you know that the plural of geese is geese? This week is all about irregular plural nouns. Take some time to practice Unit 1, Lesson 13 using the grammarworkshop.com online resources. You can take a quiz, play some games or just get a little extra practice in.

Science: We will begin to wrap up our unit on chemistry this week by learning the difference between mixtures and solutions.

Social Studies: The class will continue our unit on Native Americans, now turning our attention to the tribes of California with a focus on the people of the south coast.

Religion: This week we will complete Chapter 4: God Called Mary with a quiz on Wednesday. Click here for the chapter Study Guide. Also, since Friday is a holiday our school will be attending 8:30 mass on Thursday morning. As always, parents and families are welcome to join us if your schedule permits.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
