Dear Third Grade Families,
It was a pleasure meeting so many of you last week! With this last hurdle complete, we are finally back to normal as we once knew it. From here on out, I’ll be in the classroom full-time. Yahoo! If you were unable to make it to your conference, please contact me in order to reschedule as soon as possible. I can be reached by e-mail at thirdgrade@sacredheartschoolventura.org
This Wednesday is a free dress day. Students must bring a $1 donation if they plan to participate.
Math: We continue with chapter 9 with plans for a quiz on lessons 1-4 on Thursday. Remember to keep studying those math facts beginning with Goal 1 (the 10s – multiplication and division). Keep an eye out for progress slips in planners later in the week.
Language Arts:
Spelling— Unit 21: the /k/ and /kw/ sounds. The class will be learning various spellings for each of these sounds. Plan for our weekly spelling test on Friday morning.
Vocabulary – A Play Review! We will test on vocabulary this Friday as well.
Writing— We will move on to the next step of writing our own persuasive essays. This week we will begin taking a closer look at sample paragraphs and begin writing our own. Next week we will plump up our paragraphs with details.
Grammar— We will wrap up our unit on adjectives and move on to adverbs!
Reading— Charlotte’s Web is all done and we will begin The Story of Ruby Bridges next week. We will use this time in between books to focus on non-fiction informational texts using our “Time for Kids” readers. Please use this time to find a copy of Ruby if you have not already done so.
Religion: This week we will begin Chapter 9, “God is Just and Merciful.” This chapter focuses on God’s capacity for love and forgiveness. More specifically, we will define the words “just” and “covenant”. Weekly Stations of the Cross begin at 2:00 this Wednesday. Parents and families are welcome as always.
Science: I hope everyone got a jump start on their School Fair projects this weekend. As a reminder, they are not due until March 5th. This week we will continue our study of the solar system in class as well. This week will discuss planetary movement and the difference between rotating and revolving. It is often difficult for students to distinguish between the two, so I’d suggest talking about it at home too.
Social Studies: This week we will begin studying the three branches of our federal government as well as the roles of each.
All the Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
