Dear Third Grade Families,
Mark your calendars for Wednesday night’s School Fair in the Hall! Below is an overview of our class happenings for this week.
Math: On Monday we begin a new chapter on fractions and decimals. Like multiplication and division, this is entirely new material. Please support your child’s learning by going over terms like numerators, denominators, parts of a whole, and reading or naming fractions (one half, three sixths) with him/her. We will be covering these terms extensively in class this week.
Language Arts:
Spelling— Unit 23: contractions. This is a two-week unit. Therefore, there will not be a spelling test this Friday. Rather, the unit 23 test will be on Friday, March 15th.
Vocabulary – The Library! We will test on vocabulary this Friday.
Writing— This week we move from drafting on to revising our paragraphs. We will see lots of examples and offer constructive criticism. Then, we will begin taking a look at our own work.
Grammar— Adverbs are here. This week we will define adverbs as words that describe verbs by telling “how.” We will also take note of the fact that adverbs often end in the letters ly.
Reading— We will continue reading The Story of Ruby Bridges in class this week. We will continue with our “double entry journals” and take a closer look at the vocabulary word “segregation.” Likewise, we will complete our “cause and effect” thinking maps. FYI: Our next book is another non-fiction read, The Moon by Gail Gibbons. If you do not have this, I would suggest purchasing this now as I plan to start it late next week. As a reminder, you can find used copies on Amazon.com. Likewise, our school sells Amazon scrip. Finally, you can always check it out from your local library too.
Religion: On Monday, we will go to confession in the Church. Mrs. Danforth will prepare the students and each will have the opportunity to confess their sins to one of our parish priests. Wednesday we will return to the church for Stations of the Cross at 2:00. As always, parents and families are invited.
Science: Mark your calendar for the School Fair on Wednesday, March 5th from 6:30-8:00. Our projects are due in class Tuesday morning. I look forward to seeing the products of all your hard work
Social Studies: This week we will continue studying the three branches of our federal government as well as the roles of each.
Reading Log: Note: There will be no reading homework Monday or Wednesday night. I’d like to give families Monday to put the finishing touches on their projects as well as time Wednesday evening to come and admire them.
All the Best,
Mrs. Espinosa
