Dear Parents,              November 18, 2013

We will be taking this week to focus on Colonial times in Language Arts. We will be doing a number of fun projects that will work on our writing skills and will enrich the skills we have learned thus far in first grade. As this will be the case, we will not be learning new spelling words or be taking a test this week.

This week in math we will be continuing on with measurement! By the end of the week we will know a standard foot and be introduced to inches.

In religion, we will begin a new chapter on God promising a Savior.

In science this week we will review our lessons learned about the needs and body parts of animals. We will be headed to the lab to take a look at owl pellets to do just this. Our 8th grade friends will be there to assist and we are oh, so excited!

In social studies we will be focusing on Pilgrims and Native Americans. In addition we will begin staging our Readers Theatre Thanksgiving Play! Everyone will have a part and we will have a performance on Wednesday November 27th at 11:15 in our classroom. We will be taking home our script every night to practice our lines but please make sure that the script stays in the red homework folder for us to practice with during the day!

As we are nearing the end of our first trimester a review of sight words mastered is in order! You may see past sight words coming home for a review. A way in which we are challenging our first graders is to understand the full definition of the word and how it can be used within text. Please work with your student on recognizing the word by sight (within 3 seconds) and comprehension of the word through use in a sentence.

Reminders:

  • Please remind your child to bring their library book to school on Tuesday so that they may check out a new one.
  • Don’t forget PE clothes on Tuesday and Thursday!
  • Wednesday is $1 Free Dress. All donations will be given to aide those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines.
  • Friday is a half-day, Primary Centers, and the end of the first trimester!! Woohoo!
  • It is All About… Sophia! Congratulations!

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Have a wonderful week!

~Ms. Manning
