Hello Second Grade Families,

Monday’s field trip was a hit! The students had great fun outside exploring on the farm and, despite the rain, we were all able to come back with our arms full of freshly picked produce.

As the week continues, we have many more special events and activities to look forward to: art with Mrs. Spooner on Tuesday, free-dress Wednesday, Families on Thursday and the Jog-a-Thon on Friday only to be followed by a noon-dismisal on Monday (and Mother’s Day on Sunday). We are in the home stretch with many fun activities lined up for all.

Math: This week we will begin Unit 9: Measurement. The students will practice making linear measurements in inches, yards, centimeters, decimeters and meters. In addition, we will make measurement conversions (for example: How much of a yard is 1 centimeter? Answer: 1/100!) and learn to measure to the nearest half unit.

For IXL math homework this week, please complete the following skills:

S.3 Which customary unit is appropriate?

S.9 Which metric unit of length is appropriate?

Reading: Before we begin to review skills taught thus far in Reader’s Workshop, we will take some time this week for reading comprehension assessments. Each student will be evaluated one-on-one to determine his or her reading level. Assessments will be studied for common errors so that students we have time to address and focus on these in the final weeks of the year.

Word Work: With so many happenings, we will take a break from Word Work for a week. This means that no new sorts have been assigned and no tests will be given on Friday. Next week, we’ll pick right back up where we left off.

Writing: The class is currently on the Writing About Reading unit, focusing on how to turn partner conversations into ideas for writing. We are learning how identify that moment when the momentum is at full-speed and writing can happen more easily.

Science: We continue our unit on water with a special (longer) lab on Thursday. Students will answer the question: What’s strong enough to make a canyon.

Religion: The class will wrap up Unit 23: We are One in the Church with a series of lessons on how the church teaches us to help.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
