Hello Third Grade Families,
This Wednesday is our first field trip! We will be leaving bright and early for Underwood Farms in Moorpark for a visit to the pumpkin patch. Students should wear their regular school uniforms with comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting pretty dusty and dirty. It might be a bit overcast, so school jackets and sweaters might be a good idea too. Just make sure your child’s name is clearly written on the inside or outside so that it makes it back to the right person. Finally, we will be having lunch on the farm. Students should pack a completely disposable sack lunch with a name clearly marked on the bag. With the cooler weather this week, I am certain we will have a good time.
With a field trip on Wednesday and Centers on Friday, this week’s academics will be a bit condensed.
Take a look at what we’re planning…
Math: We will start the week with a review of the language of probability. Then, the class will continue to explore perimeter and area. Please take time to review the difference between perimeter and area with your child. Students often know the difference but have a tendency to mix the two up.
For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Third Grade Skills…
FF.5 Create Figures with a Given Area
S.4 Making Change
Reading: This week we plan to wrap up Unit 1 by learning how to talk back to the text. We will focus on questioning as readers by raising the level of questions to unearth. In addition, we will start a new class read-aloud: Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery. Perfect for the season!!!
Word Work: New words went home last Monday. Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday morning.
Writer’s Workshop: We are nearing the end of Unit 1 and have now moved on to publishing! This is the time when students put together all that they’ve learned to create one piece (or ideally, more) of their best writing. We will be working carefully with a checklist so that students may compare their work to specific goals and expectations that were established throughout the unit.
Grammar: This week is still about possessive singular and plural nouns. We will learn when the apostrophe goes before the letter s, and when it should go after.
Religion: This week is all about the Rosary as we begin Chapter 4: God Called Mary. Wednesday afternoon we will be joining the school in the Church for the Living Rosary. Students are encouraged to bring a rosary from home in a zip-lock bag (that way it doesn’t get tangled), so that they may actively participate in Wednesday’s rosary. Of course, parents and family are always welcome to join us if your schedule permits.
Have a great week!
Ms. Espinosa
