Hello 3rd Grade Families,
Happy (almost) Labor Day! This week is a short one with a four day weekend on the horizon. Although short, we will be busy as always.
Math: Continue Chapter 1 with a focus on reviewing skills taught and games introduced in previous grades. This week we will cover lessons 1.9-1.11. At this point, the Chapter 1 Test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 10th. As always, I encourage all to take advantage of the Home Links and other resources available through Everyday Math online. Usernames and Passwords can be found inside planners.
For IXL Math homework, students should complete the following skills:
O.1 Count Coins and Bills
O.2 Which picture shows more?
O.6 Put Money Amounts in Order
Note: I’ve heard in years past that the coin images can be small and difficulty to see for some. If you find this to be the case, feel free to stop after having solved as many problems that you could. If you cannot make it to the end because of this, try and give yourself a minimum of 15 minutes per skill and that will be OK.
Language Arts:
Reading Logs: Directions for logging on and “connecting” to the class Reading Glue account have been sent out. Check your e-mail for directions. Students are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes per evening 5 days a week. That’s a total of 100 minutes each week cozied up with a good book. Remember to log on and record each reading session. There is very little required for each entry, so this should be pretty quick and easy. I’ll total each student’s minutes on Monday, thus giving you 7 days to meet the 100 minute requirement.
Click here for this week’s fluency passage due upon our return on Tuesday 9/8.
Spelling: This week we begin Words Their Way, a developmental approach to spelling instruction. On Monday, your child will go home with spelling words written in the planner as well as a label indicating which “Sort” (list of spelling words) he/he is on. Use the Sort # as a guide when you log onto SpellingCity.com to practice. It will tell you which is your spelling list. Our first spelling test will be on Wednesday, September 9th.
Science: This week we make our debut visit into the science lab. Will be learning all about energy by making pizza box solar ovens.
Social Studies: Students will begin a geography unit focusing on finding our location. We will start with a review of the seven continents.
Religion: We begin Chapter 2: God Gives Us Gifts!
Have a great week!
Ms. Espinosa
