Dear Third Grade Families,

Congratulations to our class finalists for the annual Palmisano Writing Contest: Nicholas, Amanda, Kaylee, Anthony & Maria. We are all looking forward to hearing the winners announced on Wednesday.

Math: This week we will wrap up our study of fractions. We will be focusing on finding equivalent fractions as well as identifying fractions by their placement on a number line. We will take the Chapter 11 test (fractions only) on Thursday.

Language Arts:

Spelling— Unit 24: This is a review unit. Students will have 25 words that they have studied in the past. 18 will be selected for our test on Friday. (Hint: You can expect to see their, there and they’re.)

Spelling

Vocabulary – Since this is a review unit with 25 words, there will be no vocabulary this week.

Writing— This week we plan work on publishing our writer’s workshop essays. The students are doing a great job of showing their best work, incorporating revisions from our individual writing conferences and finding even more ways to improve their essays. Also, this week Miss Alden will begin teaching us the fundamentals of cursive writing.

Grammar— We are just about done with adverbs for now. We will have a short quiz on Wednesday to wrap up the unit.

Reading— We will continue with The Moon by Gail Gibbons. Since this is an informational text, we will focus on organizing some of the many moon facts offered in book.

Reading Log

Religion: In class, we will study the season of Lent as well as look at what to expect during Holy Week.

Science: We continue with the solar system beginning Chapter 5, “Cycles and Patterns in Space.” More specifically, we will study the rotation of the Earth and how that leads to day and night on our planet. We will also cover sunrise and sunset as the sun appears to move across the sky from east to west.

Social Studies: This week we will continue to look at the role of rules and laws in our daily life. We will determine the reason for rules and laws as well as the role of citizenship to promote these.

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
