Dear Third Grade Families,

Happy Valentine’s Day! Our class mailboxes were decorated Friday afternoon and are absolutely adorable. Now, we’re ready to fill them up with cards from friends. On Tuesday we will celebrate with a variety of Valentine’s Day themed activities culminating in our class party. Thank you in advance to the room moms who put this together. The students have been looking forward to it for some time now and I’m sure a good time will be had by all. Please remember that any student who plans to give out valentines must give them to every student in our class. If your child would like to address each one, you can always check our class roster (sent out at the beginning of the year by our trusty room moms) for the spelling of each child’s name. On this day, all SHS students are expected to wear their uniforms. However, students may accessorize with Valentine’s Day appropriate accoutrements as we have for other holidays in the past.

This week we will also be going on our first field trip of the year! On Thursday, we will be going to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. This is sure to be a great supplement to our study of the solar system. Please be sure that your child arrives at school on time and in his/her uniform. Likewise, students should bring a sack lunch. At the request of the Museum of Natural History, students should pack a “no trash lunch.” This consists of a reusable lunch box containing food in reusable containers. As a reminder, juice boxes, plastic baggies and pre-packaged snack packs have a tremendous cumulative effect on our environment. Also, we will be expected to haul out any and all trash we have and take it back to our school. I’d like to minimize this as much as possible.

In additions to all this fun, your students can look forward to beginning fractions this week! We will learn words like numerator and denominator as we begin to identify and write fractions.

Friday morning I will not be here as I will be attending a workshop with a group of other SHS teachers.

Finally, Monday, February 20th is holiday. School will not be in session in observance of President’s Day. Enjoy the long weekend!

Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
