Hello Third Grade Families!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful holiday among friends and family.

This week we will begin many new units and chapters including…

Math: We will begin Unit 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals. The unit will begin with a review of place value through the millions along with some practice reading, writing and ordering numbers.

As always, see the Home Links at www.everydaymathonline.com for extra practice with skills learned in class. Your child’s username and password can be found in his/her planner.

For IXL this week, students are to complete the following third grade skills:

H.2 Divide by 2

H.4 Divide by 4

B.2 Place Value Names

As discussed at parent conferences, I will begin math facts testing next week and continue until each student meets every goal. Below is a copy of the 8 individual multiplication and division goals. Students should be studying their specific goal at home for no more than 10-15 minutes or so every night. In doing so, remember to reinforce the relationship between multiplication and division. (It’s all skip counting within the same fact family.) Click here for the list of math facts goals for 3rd grade.

Spelling: Click here for this week’s spelling words & pattern.

Vocabulary: This week we will begin Unit 9. Our next vocabulary quiz will be next Friday.

Reading: Keep your eye out for an e-mail this week listing which books your child will need for Unit 3. We continue to focus on inferential questions as we turn more of our attention toward building comprehension skills.

Grammar: The class will take some time to review parts of Unit 3 covered before the break (present and past tense verbs with a focus on spelling) and move on to lesson 19: Future-Tense Verbs.

Science: Chapter 4 continues as we learn all about the solar system. Coming Soon: Keep an eye on your inbox for directions for this year’s School Fair project!

Social Studies: In Chapter 3, students will be learning all about the land and the first people of California: the Native Americans! We will start by reading a Karuk legend and then move on to the tribes of California.

Religion: We will begin Chapter 8: God is Holy and Great!

Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
