Dear Second Grade Families,
As we enter the sixth week of school, we are continuing to work on first-time listening, class room manners, and respect for others. Encourage your child to pay attention to these endeavors. This is another full 5-day week with a full day on Friday. Students will enjoy a family activity on Friday.
We will start testing this week. (The ITBS, or Iowa Test of Basic Skills). Since this is the first testing period for your student, we will approach it slowly. We will have about 9 days to complete the whole thing. Our testing period for each day will be from 8:15-10:00. You can help your child by continuing to make sure he/she has a good night’s sleep and has a healthy breakfast before leaving home in the morning. Please make sure your child is on time for school and do not schedule any appointments in the morning. We will begin with a practice test today, Monday.
Flat People are in progress. The tracing has been done and now we are working on the details of outfits and shoes. Next will be the coloring and facial details! Please remember addresses need to be in by this Friday. Please pick someone to host your flat student who can really commit to this project.
FLAT PERSON SITING: Christian Maulhardt’s dad is an airline pilot. While he was in the cockpit he had his picture taken with a Flat person who was traveling with his Flat person host! Flat People are out and about!!!
IN THE CLASSROOM (in addition to testing)
RELIGION: We will begin discussing Baptism, when we received grace and a share in God’s life. This is the first of seven sacraments. As part of this lesson your child will receive a paper candle to decorate and write their name, date of Baptism and the church. These candles are due Friday. If your child is not baptized or of another Christian faith, just color and include the name. Second graders are to do the writing and decorating. In addition, if you have any mementoes of this important day, your child can bring these in to share.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Reading for comprehension and fluency; short and long vowels; creative writing; sentence punctuation and writing.
MATH: Algebra readiness: adding with 3 addends (looking for doubles and sums of ten to aid us in our work); Doubles, doubles plus one, beginning study of subtraction.

Have a good week,
