Hello Second Grade Families,

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Please keep an eye on the School Calendar for exciting weekly events all month long in celebration of Read Across America.

This week in class, we will be hard at work on the following…

Math: This week will be dedicated to perfecting our subtraction with regrouping skills before working with multiples of equal groups. This will lay the early foundations for multiplication.

For IXL math homework this week, please complete the following skills…

H.6 Subtract two 2-digit numbers with regrouping

L.7 Input/Output tables ~ add/subtract by 10

Q.11 Time patterns

Reader’s Workshop: We will start the week with a study of silent consonants that camouflage themselves with the sounds of other letters (wr, gn, kn) before getting into the difference between the hard and soft “g” and “c”.

Writer’s Workshop: The first half of this week will be all about strategies for spelling tricky, domain-specific words without losing your writerly momentum. After that, we will discuss how writer’s can employ readers to help them add and subtract in the revision process.

Word Work: Students took home this week’s words on Monday. Since it is a short week, please plan for a test the following Monday. As always, students should take home an extra copy of their words. Individual sorts can also be accessed on SpellingCity.com.

Science: This week we will continue to ask “Why do we wear clothes” as a part of our Material Magic (properties of matter) unit. We will close out the week with a lab in which students will be tasked with designing a hat!

Religion: We will finish Chapter 17’s study of the early parts of the mass in preparation for First Communion. Next week we will receive our parts for this special day.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
