FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER

NOTE FROM MRS. VAZQUEZ:

I can’t believe we are in October. The kids did great on their FIRST spelling test!  You can take a peek at their test on Wednesday.

HOMEWORK

Homework is always due on Tuesday.  Reminder, homework for the week is not given until Tuesday.

  • Reading Log 15+ min. daily (Students must write their own name, write tally marks, & write minutes)
  • Math IXL.com Skill B.1 (100%)
  • Language IXL.com Skill   G.2 (100%)
  • Math/Language Worksheet (Please make sure your child colors the worksheet if needed/write their own name in pencil)
  • SIGHT WORDS
  • Study for Spelling Test on Monday.     Reminder: I am only testing beginning sounds of words but expect the students to spell the rest of the word phonetically.  For example, if I give the word “cheese”; the correct answers would be, chese, chees, ches, and chez.  If they write, any other beginning sound or omit the “h”, it will be counted wrong.  There are some groups that have words instead of pictures.  The student must spell the whole word correctly  if they have words in their sorts. If you have any questions, please send me an email.
  • FLUENCY homework begins today!  This will be part of your child’s homework.  Please do NOT do the fluency all in one day.  It is meant for daily practice.    Look at the information letter regarding fluency in your child’s homework folder.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts:

Our skill this week is “use your powers to push your way through tricky words.”  If you come up to a tricky work, look at the beginning sound and the pictures cues. It was great to see all the practicing happening during  Reader’s Workshop.  Please have them show off their new skill while they read this week.

In writing, students continue writing about their small moments.

Math: We’ve started Unit 2 with much success.  We are reviewing number formation, tally marks, skip counting by 5’s, and learning the sums of 5 and 10. 🙂

Religion: We will be taking our religion test this week.  We will begin Chapter 3

Science:  We have started learning about how scientist ask questions because they are curious.  Ask your child, what they are observing this week.  Clue: We use it to write, eat, and play.
