Hello Families!

This week has started with new reading groups and math groups! We are preparing for Lent this week.

Weekly Homework

Homework due EVERY Tuesday

Fluency: Fluency

Reading Challenge: It’s the March challenge. Please make sure students are reading every day for at least 20 minutes. It’s great to know that kids are reading more than 20 minutes a day!

You will notice that the students have three library books this week. From this day forward, students will check out three books.

Math IXL: Attached to the reading challenge, you will find a math worksheet. As a first grader, students must be able to complete this work independently. You may read the directions if needed to your child. If you find your child struggling, please review those skills.

I have noticed an improvement in students spelling their last names without using their name tag. I encourage you to have them memorize your cell phone number or house phone (if you have one).

Sneak Peek to our Academic Week

Word Work: New sorts this week. Some students will be staying on the same sort for two weeks. Don’t be surprised if you see the same sort written in their planner next week.

Reading: We are working on character analysis, author’s purpose, and writing a retell.

Writing/Grammar: We continue to write, write, write! It’s all about nonfiction writing.

We will be reviewing nouns/verbs. We will learn to identify a common and proper noun. Next week, we will focus on plural and singular nouns. We will soon focus on adjectives.

We are working on checking a few things in our sentences such as capital letter, spaces between words and punctuation marks at the end.

Math:  We have been learning a lot about measurement. We have been measuring to the closest inch or centimeters. We are learning that 12 inches equal one foot.  We will be checking to see how tall we are in first grade!

Religion: We are learning about fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. We go to Mass on Ash Wednesday and on Friday.

Science: We will complete our lesson on the moon. Oreo cookies will be involved!

Reminders:

  • Homework is due Tuesday.
  • Monday: Library books are due on Monday.
  • Friday: 12 pm Dismissal

REMINDER: ALWAYS CHECK THE SCHOOL WEBSITE FOR ADDITIONAL EVENTS OR ANNOUNCEMENTS.
