Week of January 9-13, 2012
Dear Second Grade Families,
Sacrament time is soon approaching. The Sacrament of Reconciliation for your Sacred Heart School child will be celebrated during the school day. We will be meeting with our priests soon to set the date. Information and the dates (for both sacraments) will be sent home soon. Included will be a recommended clothing requirements list for Holy Communion. Since all the stores seem to be having sales, this will help you in your purchases and planning.
FRIDAY is a short day (12:00 dismissal) and also January Primary Centers. If you can contribute an unopened package of white miniature marshmallows for this day, it would be great. Please let us know by Wednesday so we can plan. Thanks.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK will be at the end of this month. There will be more information coming. Look for further details in the school newsletter for all the activities.
FLAT PEOPLE post cards will be sent out this week. We will be writing another letter at the end of the month requesting the return of flat second graders.
HERE’S A LOOK AT WHAT WE HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS WEEK…

RELIGION: In preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we are studying ways to love God and others, (the Two Great Commandments given to us by Jesus). The Act of Contrition will also go home this week so you can begin practicing at home. We will be saying the prayer daily. We will continue to learn about ways to obey and show love.
READING: Begin the story “Jamaica Louise James”, a realistic fiction selection. We will be reading for comprehension and fluency.
SPELLING: Unit 17, Homophones: words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Dictation will also begin this week. There will be 5 sentences using spelling words and word-wall and everyday words.
LANGUAGE ARTS: plurals, vowel pairs ‘ee’ and ‘ea’, words that end in ‘tion’ and ‘ture’; Dictionary work; creative writing; Dictionary and Thesaurus work; winter language arts.
MATH: Addition and subtraction facts to 20 with the beginning of once a week math tests to keep skills sharp. We will be finishing up our unit on place value and look forward to double digit adding with and without regrouping. Keep counting money and telling time on an analog clock.
Have a good week,
