4th Grade Families,

Happy Monday! It was great to meet many of you this last week at Back to School Night. Thank you for coming into our classroom and seeing where we learn!

Welcome to the first 4th grade newsletter of the school year! Newsletters will be posted each week to highlight important dates, homework, and to also give you an overview of what we’ll be learning that week.

Here’s our week in 4th grade…

Math:

  • We have taken our Unit 1 test on Geometric Figures and are reviewing some key concepts before we move ahead to our next chapter. We will begin Unit 2: Using Numbers and Organizing Data this week.

ELA:

  • Writing: We have been focusing on planning our Realistic Fiction stories. We’ve started to develop our characters and are moving into creating story arcs to guide us in the writing process.
  • Reading: We are strategizing how to read intensely to grow ideas as we dive into our books. As a class we are focusing on fiction and how characters develop over time. This week we start our Reading Response Journals. Remember nightly homework is to read 20-30 minutes!
  • Words Their Way: We will not begin word work this week. We are continuing to assess in order to form our spelling groups.

Religion:

  • This week we discuss the Bible and how it is God’s Word and Sacred Scripture. We will read about how the Bible is another way that God tells us He loves us. We will have our first religion quiz this week on Friday.

Social Studies:

  • We have started our 2nd Social Studies lesson about California’s geography, focusing on our 4 regions. Today we were also visited by our 8th graders who taught us about the U.S. Constitution. (Happy Constitution Day!)

Science:

  • This week, we will continue our learning of the Human Machine. Last week we were focused on how our eyes work, but this week we will learn about our brains!

Weekly Homework:

This week we start our homework! Homework directions will be in your child’s homework folder going home on Tuesday.

  • IXL Math:
    • V.5: Identify parallel, perpendicular, and intersection lines
    • W.10: Classify Quadrilaterals
  • Reading:
    • 20-30 minutes a night
    • 5 Reading Responses (1 response after each time of reading)

Important Dates:

  • Tuesday, September 20: First day of art with Ms. Sofer!
  • Friday, September 23: 2pm Dismissal

Have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
