Hello 4th Grade Families, and hello October!

Please remind students to have their kindles charged and ready to go in their backpacks each day. We are using our kindles in class everyday so it’s important they are prepped! 🙂

Our Week:

  • Math: This week, we start to wrap up Unit 2 about data. We are also focusing on multi-digit addition and subtraction strategies. We’ve especially practiced the partial sum strategy for adding (ex: 324 + 418 can be solved by finding 300+400=700, 20+10=30, and 4+8=12 –> 700+30+12=742). Students are encouraged to use these strategies on their IXL homework this week!
  • Reading: We continue our learning with fiction texts. As students read their own books, they are being thoughtful about what ideas they could debate within the text. We are thinking: Could I debate… if my character is strong or weak, which character is more to blame, which character is more powerful/happier/meaner/etc. ? Soon we will read with partners so that we can debate texts together.
  • Writing: Students are continuing their drafts of their realistic fiction stories. We are focusing on refining our ideas so that readers can make mental movies of what we write. Students are adding great dialogue and detail to their works.
  • Religion: This week we will work through Chapter 4: God Offers Us Eternal Life. We will talk about Heaven together.
  • Science: We have taken our 1st chapter test and will go over our work this week before settling into our new topic of learning: The Rock Cycle.
  • Social Studies: Students will continue to explore the affects of California’s geography on humans.

Have a wonderful week,

Ms. Schmaeling
