Hey there 4th Grade Families!

Lots going on in 4th grade this week. We are diving deep into our work and learning is at all time high! A note before you read on… please make sure students have athletic shoes for PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We want our students to get the most out of their active time, and proper shoes will help with that! 🙂 Also, unless it is a free-dress day, uggs and other slipper-like shoes are to be left at home. Thank you!

Important Dates:

  • Book Fair: Thursday, January 26 – Tuesday, January 31 (more info from Mrs. Benner on website)
  • 12pm Dismissal: Friday, January 27

Homework:

  • IXL Math: (Remember, the goal is NOT 100 — do your best)
    • D.14: Multiply 1-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using area models II (This is just like our Partial Products method! 🙂 )
    • D.21: Multiply 1-digit numbers by multi-digit numbers using partial products
  • 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • Please have students read NONFICTION — they have checked out books from our library and continue to do so if needed

Our Week:

  • Math: Multiplication and Big Numbers! We continue to practice different strategies for multiplication. Students are encouraged to use whatever strategy works best for them, but to also use multiple strategies to check their work.
  • Writing: Gathering the Materials for our Essays: mini-stories, lists, examples, etc. Like builders, we have created the “frame” of our essays with our Thesis and Reasons. Now, we work to gather the other materials needed to make our writing come to life!
  • Reading: Weather Extremes – Students are preparing to present on their topics with their groups. We plan to present on Thursday and share what we researched to the class. Ask your student what they’ve researched!
  • Word Work: Students have received their new words for the week and will have their tests on Friday.
  • Religion: The 10 Commandments – Students are learning the history of the 10 commandments and how they are God’s Laws. We are discussing what they mean and how we can live by them. (In religion this week, we will also have our Internet Safety lesson).
  • Social Studies: Early European Explorers – We continue to learn about the Europeans that came to California, as well as the relationship between them and the Natives. We also touch upon this conversation in our reading of The Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Let’s have a wonderful week!

Ms. Schmaeling
