Dear 4th Grade Families,

Thank you again for taking time to meet with me about your students. It’s been great discussing how much progress has already been made this year. Thank you for your continued support at home with our learning goals!

Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Also, don’t forget to check the end of this post for the latest episode of our podcast!

Important Dates and Reminders:

  • Wednesday, November 8: Make Up Picture Day
  • Friday, November 10: No School – Veterans Day
  • Wednesday, November 15: Free Dress (Sports Day) with donations going to Adopt-a-Family
  • Friday, November 17: Fall Showcase! 2pm Dismissal (more details in family envelope)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: PE! Please have students wear appropriate shoes and their PE uniforms.
  • Tuesdays: Library Day! Our class will visit the library every Tuesday afternoon to “check out” and read books. Students are able to take 2 books/week and can return and re-check out new books each week. ***This week we will go to the library on Wednesday as Tuesday is filled with other activities***

Our Learning:

  • Math: In math, we work on Number Stories and how to understand them. We look for key words and practice rereading the problem so that it makes more sense.
  • Reading: We have finished The Tiger Rising. Students will participate in a closing activity related to the book and discuss how our characters have evolved.
  • Writing: Personal Narratives – At this point, students have published their first Personal Narratives that they’ve taken through the entire writing process. We will produce one more writing piece after reviewing what each one of us has done well and where our areas of growth are.
  • Grammar: Conjunctions — Conjunction Junction… what’s your function? This week, we study “FANBOYS” and the role of conjunctions.
  • Religion: The Spiritual Department in middle school visits us to share about the Saints. As a class, we move into a new chapter discussing how we are changed when we get baptized. We study the story of Saul and how he became Paul.
  • Science: We took our Science test last week on the human body. Our next unit will be focused on The Birth of Rocks.
  • Social Studies: Our nature walk last week helped us think about the natural resources in our community.

Homework: DUE NOVEMBER 14

  • Reading Response Journal: around 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • We are switching to nonfiction! For homework, students will read and respond according to the menu for nonfiction texts. Students were able to check out nonfiction (and fiction) books at our library today. **Reminder: Students may take home 2 books at a time, making sure to return these books before they may check out new ones.**
    • Students are still welcome to read fiction, but the response journal will be focused on nonfiction.
  • IXL: (Students do not need to reach 100%. Please encourage your students to do their best, but 100% is not required)
    • 4th Grade Math A.3: Relationship between place values
    • 4th Grade Math A.5: Convert between standard and expanded form

Let’s have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
