Dear 4th Grade Families,

Happy Monday! It was so great to see many of you at our Spring Showcase on Friday. I am very proud of all our 4th graders, they worked diligently on their mission research projects and it showed! Now we push forward into new topic of studies in this 3rd Trimester!

Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Don’t forget to check out our most recent episode of the 4th Grade Pod”class” linked below.

  • Monday, March 18: Art with Ms. Sofer
  • Tuesday, March 19: Red Envelopes and Progress Reports go home
  • Wednesday, March 20: Stations of the Cross – 1:50pm
  • Friday, March 22: 12pm Dismissal
  • Math: Students are practicing division story problems. We focus on how to interpret remainders, whether we should ignore them, or use them to round up our answers.
  • Reading: Our reading groups are back in action this week. We have finished our reading of Island of the Blue Dolphins and will be doing a few concluding activities related to that focus.
  • Writing: The 3rd Trimester is our time to start up our last piece of writing in the form of informational writing. Students will become experts on topics and educate their classmates — This week, we will also be writing a class book! We will decide on a topic, make drafts, and then publish our class book.
  • Grammar: Similes and Metaphors
  • Word Work: We continue on with Words Their Way! This is our differentiated spelling program where we focus on spelling patterns to help us become the best spellers we can be. Spelling words can be found on Vocabulary A-Z + in your child’s planner. It’s always great to practice these throughout the week.
  • Religion: This week we discuss the commandments given to us by God and how we can live them out to the best of our abilities, and how they help us! We also continue to work on our Stations of the Cross booklets in preparation of Easter.
  • Science: Sound! This week, students work on a paper cup telephone and improving its functionality!
  • Social Studies: Students will be learning about the end of the Mission era as well as Mexico’s Independence. We will begin our studies about the Gold Rush soon!
  • Reading Homework: 5 reading responses
    • Students are encouraged to read 20-30 minutes each night. After reading, students will select a question/task from their reading menu to answer in their journal. 5 responses are to be completed by next Tuesday. Students may read either fiction or non-fiction and choose a corresponding task.
  • Math Homework:
    • Study Link 6-4: Interpreting Remainders
    • IXL skill: DD.1: Measure using an inch ruler

Let’s have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
