Dear 4th Grade Families,

Happy Catholic Schools Week! As a school this week, we are celebrating the various groups of people who help shape our Catholic school community. Thanks to our Middle School departments and 8th grade leadership, we have activities that focus on each day! Listed below are the themes for the week:

Here’s an update of what we are currently learning in class! Also, don’t forget to check the end of this post for the latest episode of our podcast!

Important Dates and Reminders:

  • Monday – Friday this week: Warm Wear + Food Drive (you may drop off items in the carlines)
  • Tuesday, January 30: Free Free Dress (keeping in mind PE)
  • Friday, February 2: 12pm Dismissal
  • February 7: Field Trip!

Our Learning:

  • Math: We continue to practice our multi-digit multiplication! First, we make a rough estimate so that we can check if our exact answer is close. The method we have been practicing is the Partial-Products method which helps us make sure we multiply each part of the factors by each other.
  • Reading: Our reading groups are in action! Students are reading and taking notes as they read on important facts and main ideas. As a class, we keep reading Island of the Blue Dolphins and reflect on how Karana is feeling being alone on the island.
  • Writing: Opinion — This week, we focus on organizing our writing into paragraphs. We also practice writing different topic and conclusion sentences to make our writing flow better.
  • Grammar: Similes and Metaphors
  • Religion: We continue to learn about God’s mercy.
  • Science: The Birth of Rocks — How could you survive a landslide? – We continue this lesson and share our ideas for protecting our house, if we lived near a potential landslide area.
  • Social Studies: This week, we start to learn about the Missions. We remind ourselves of the Spanish explorers and now learn about missionaries. Soon, students will begin their research on their specific mission.
  • NO HOMEWORK ON TUESDAY, 1/30 (STUDENT DAY!)
  • Reading Homework: 4 reading responses
    • Students are encouraged to read 20-30 minutes each night. After reading, students will select a question/task from their reading menu to answer in their journal. 4 responses are to be completed by next Tuesday. Students may read either fiction or non-fiction and choose a corresponding task.
  • Math Homework:
    • 5-6 Study Link
    • 5-7 Study Link

Let’s have a great week,

Ms. Schmaeling
