Dear Parents,                     May 4, 2015

Thank you to all who came to support our first graders in our May Crowning on Friday. It was absolutely beautiful. I must admit I did get a bit teary-eyed.

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: Our reading strategy this week is questioning.  Reading the title, looking at the pictures and stopping to ask oneself questions are strategies good readers use.  The comprehension skill that will help us with understanding a story is compare and contrast.  Understanding how events, characters, etc. are the same and how they are different leads us to a better understanding of the story.  Our phonics focus this week is on the vowel pairs, oi, oy as in boy or oil and aw, au as in saw or sauce.  We are also learning the suffixes –ful, -ly, and –y and our grammar focus is on using describing words.

Spelling: We do not have new spelling words this week!

Math: We are wrapping up with our unit! We will be taking our test on Thursday.

Religion: We will be reading from our religion books this week: Jesus Is With Us in His Church.

Science: In science we are continuing to look at matter. This week it is all about gas!

Social Studies: We will be continuing our Social Studies unit, In and Around the Land. We will be finishing the chapter this week and if we can we will take our test by the end of the week. If not, then our test will be taken in the beginning of next week.
