Hello Families!
What a wonderful week we had in first grade! We continued our study of coins and they did a great job learning how to count mixed groups of coins! We learned how to break down coins into helpful groups of 5 by drawing what we call, “hairs on our coins. The penny is the only one without hair because it is worth less than .05. A laminated homework chart will come home in their homework folder on Wednesday to be a homework visual.
In reading, we are working hard on scooping up sounds and scanning the endings to see if the word has: es, ed, ing, and ly. Many parents wanted a list of good first-grade books to help them pick out books that fit their readers. I enclosed a slide in the “Weekly Family News” email that has 100 books for developing readers in first grade for you to be able to print out.
In Science, we had so much fun learning about the Solar Eclipse! I was so proud of them for understanding that keeping our eyes safe was important! They enjoyed watching NASA’s live stream and the videos that explained eclipses.
We are on week 20 of Heggerty phonological lessons. Whew! It was a tricky week! They were having to replace the second sound in words to make new sounds. All by listening to the instructor on the video. For example, she says: “The word is smash. Take the “mmmm sound out”, what’s the new word”? It is, “sash.” We will continue to work on this challenge! Heggerty and Better Alphabet links are in the weekly email as well! Reminders below!
