FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER

NOTE FROM MRS. VAZQUEZ:

It was wonderful to see so many families at Back to School! In this newsletter, you will find a recap of our back to school along with some additional information on homework.  My newsletter will be posted weekly with information regarding some of our highlights for the week in the First Grade Life at SHS!

HOMEWORK

Your children should return their yellow folder and daily planner to school every day.  I use the yellow folder for any information the office or I will send out unexpectantly.   Please make sure to sign each day with only an intial since room is very limited.  I highlighted the general area where you should initial.

Remember to read 15 minutes each night during the week.  You may increase to 20 minutes a day to help complete your reading minutes. Reading Log  & IXL/worksheet is due on Tuesday.

Your child is learning to neatly write their assignments in their planner daily.  The homework assignment below is what you should see written in their planner except for the worksheet (no room to write in planner).

  • Reading Log 15+ min. daily
  • Math IXL.com Skill A.1
  • Language IXL.com Skill A.1
  • Math/Language Worksheet (Please make sure your child colors the worksheet)

Reading Log:  Students are to read or be read to for 15 minutes daily.  Please have your child write their name at the top of the reading log and fill in tally marks.  For example, if your child reads 5 books in 15 minutes, I should see 5 tally marks.  If your child reads 1 book, I should see one tally mark. Then, write how many minutes it took to read the books.   I only require one signature at the bottom of the reading log.

If you have any questions, please send me an email.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We continue to work on Kindergarten Review. We are reviewing letter sounds and printing letters.   We started our Reader’s Workshop by learning how to take a sneak peek at our book before reading it.  In writing, we will complete writing assessements on narrative and opinion writing.

Math: We will work on comparing numbers, writing numbers, reading a calendar, and completing assessments.

Religion: Family Life Series/ We will discuss what families do and how families love and help.

REMINDERS

  • We will visit the school library on Tuesday  and will check out a book. Students can bring their books home but they MUST be returned to school each Tuesday in order for them to check out a new book.
  • Remember PE uniforms on Tuesday and Thursday! Please make sure that long hair is pulled back and all students are wearing tennis shoes.
  • As a reminder, if your child cannot tie their own shoes, your student must wear Velcro shoes, especially on P.E. days. Please see our school handbook for more information regarding dress code.
  • We have Mass every Friday.  All families are welcome to attend at 8:30.  Every first Friday of the month, we have a “family mass” where children participate in mass including our friends (3-8) in choir.
  • Check on our school website for all PRIMARY CENTER days!  I will always need volunteers.  🙂
  • Friday is a noon-dismissal day.
  • No school on Monday!
  • PICTURE DAY, Sept.5th!!!! You will find their picture form in their yellow homework folder.

Please send me an email with any questions. 🙂

Have a fabulous week!
