Most students have the same spelling words from two weeks ago. Check their planners to see if their was a change. I will be giving them their spelling test on Friday instead of Thursday as previously mentioned.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We are learning about vowel teams such as ee, ea, oa, and ai. These vowel teams make long vowel sounds. We’ve added new vowel teams ay (day), ou(bounce), oo (boo!) and ow (flower). We are learning that they don’t always make the same sound.

Retelling a story is another skill we are working on by reading Yazmin which we will begin by the end of this week. We started this week with our new book, What would Danny do? This book is all about choices a character can make to change the ending of the book. Kids are loving this book because there will be a total of 9 different endings to the story.

Math: A reminder from two weeks ago: I gave students a math test before our departure. I sent it home on Wednesday. I will allow retakes on May 3rd if your child needed more time to practice some math skills. A reminder to all, there are two parts to the math test (PART A and PART B). Part A is what I make sure all students MASTER and part B plans my future lessons. I will only have them retake the test of PART A if it’s not mastered.

Our new unit will be combination of two units with a review of skip counting, addition and subtraction facts, and math fact families. The new concepts will be 3 dimensional shapes, polygons, coutning money with quarters, We will be working on making up and solving number stories. Example: If you have 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 2 mickels. Do you have enough money to buy a pencil and a pair of scissors? (Scissors: 32 cents & pencil is 28 cents).

Writing: The kids are learning to give their opinions in writing. They will fill a paper bag with about five or six small (troll, action figure, one lego, etc.) toys that they LOVE. They will be writing a few pieces regarding the reasons behind LOVING their toy. 🙂 They will keep this in school for about two weeks so be sure to send only what they can part with in a two week period.

Science: Is oobleck a solid or liquid? Caution (a little messy): Your child will come home with a sample of oobleck this week. I will remind them NOT to take it into their room and only use with parent permission. 🙂

Religion: We will be preparing for our May crowning on May 17th. Please make sure to mark your calendars. 🙂 First grade prepares and presents the crown to Mary.
