A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We continue learning about vowel teams such as ee, ea, oa, and ai. These vowel teams make long vowel sounds. We’ve added new vowel teams ay (day), ou(bounce), oo (boo!) and ow (flower). Believe it or not but we added more vowel teams! The oo like in moon and the oo like in book have joined the vowel town. We are learning that they don’t always make the same sound.

Retelling a story is another skill we are working on by reading Yazmin which we will begin by the end of this week. We started this week with our new book, What should Danny do? This book is all about choices a character can make to change the ending of the book. Kids are loving this book because there will be a total of 9 different endings to the story. The students are learning that we ALL have the POWER TO CHOOSE like Danny. 🙂

Math: Kids are having fun learning about 3-D shapes. The new concepts will be 3 dimensional shapes, polygons, counting money with quarters, We will be working on making up and solving number stories.Example: If you have 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 2 nickels. Do you have enough money to buy a pencil and a pair of scissors? (Scissors: 32 cents & pencil is 28 cents).

Please practice the value of each coin especially the quarter. Give your child a few coins to count at home.

Writing: Kids are having a blast writing about their toys. Thank you for sending in the toys to inspire them to write.

Science: Hope you had some fun with the oobleck! This week we are completing a little surprise for our special mom.

Religion: We will be preparing for our May crowning on May 17th. Please make sure to mark your calendars. 🙂 First grade prepare and present the crown to Mary.
